Procrastination

“Oh, I don’t have to worry about it now, I still have another week to study.”             This is a thought that often crosses the mind of many students to avoid facing the reality of an approaching deadline. As a senior in college, I have had many experiences that have lead me to believe that procrastination is often more harmful than beneficial. Moreover, this process of thinking actually interrupts our ability to learn and to grasp the material because it allows us to leave assignments to the last minute. For example, many of us students, will resort to start writing a term paper the night before it is due. Similarly, others will start studying for a test the evening before the exam only to realize that they will not have enough time, so they stay up all night. When we give ourselves a very limited time to finish an assignment the quality of it is compromised because we are too busy being overwhelmed by panic and anxiety. Thus, often we f...

A Rewarding Experience

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be one of the greatest decisions you’ll make in your life. I remember when my English professor mentioned that the Writing and Reading Center was looking for tutors and encouraged us in the Honors Program to apply. At first I thought I was not smart enough to tutor students in a language that I did not fully understand till I was 13 years old, but something in me believed that it would be a rewarding experience. I believe students are able to succeed with the right support and guidance which is why I am glad that our service can ben...

Due tomorrow? Do tomorrow, right? That’s what a lot of students would like to think. And that might work out when you're in a pinch but what if the assignment is way too big to complete in one day? Forgo sleep or skip other classes to get it done? I don’t know about you but I love my sleep and therefore am not cut out for all-nighters. The pressure, combined with lack of sleep, affects my ability to focus on the task at hand and turns me into a fire-breathing student-zilla. So what did I do to prevent this panic before I got to that point of no return? I organized my life via planner. My planner helps me stay on top of things and now I preach the good word of planners to anybody who wants to succeed in college or in any goal for that matter.  Starting your Planner: Planning looks different for everyone, so do whatever works best for your personality. I like to set up my own planner out of a blank gridded notebook, but I realize I’m pretty extra. Your planner can be as e...
