Relaxing at the Movies
During this time of year, people begin to travel or go to the beach and spend more time with friends and family; for others, they are finally able to dive deep into their creativity and write a poem or a short story—or even a novel! Nonetheless, this is your time to relax—and however way you like to spend your summer, going to the theater and watching a good movie is always something fun to do, and luckily this is another stacked year for motion pictures. These are some flicks to check out next time you’re at the movies:
· Hereditary: We’re halfway through 2018, but Ari Aster’s supernatural horror film is already hailed as the scariest movie of the year and, according to some critics, the scariest film since The Exorcist! I found this film to have a nice slow and gradual pace, which builds up to a truly suspenseful and intense climax. The conclusion of the film is arguably one of the most controversial endings in recent memory—some thought it to be a great and terrifying twist while others found it to be rather peculiar and flat-out bizarre. Either way, it’s an ending—and a movie—you won’t forget anytime soon!
· Solo: A Star Wars Story: Here we have another installment in the great Star Wars franchise! Admittedly, this film isn’t as action-packed as, say, The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi, but it’s still a lot of fun, and takes the franchise into new and interesting directions. There’s also a surprise cameo towards the end of the film that will make any Star Wars fan gasp in disbelief and cheer in excitement!
· Incredibles 2: Come on. It’s Incredibles 2! This spectacular film is one that people of all ages will be able to enjoy and appreciate. I’ve seen this film twice already, and I don’t mean to be hyperbolic, but I would certainly put Incredibles 2 in the same category as The Dark Knight, Aliens, The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, and the Godfather II as being one of the best sequels. Yes, it was that good—and yes, it was worth the 14-year wait. (Also, there’s a Pixar short film right before that, in only five minutes, will make wish you had a box of tissues!)
With commercial and critically successful films like Deadpool 2 and Incredibles 2, Hereditary and A Quiet Place, it’s quite the year for sequels and for the horror/suspense genre! However, if you prefer to stay home (rather than driving to the theater and spending almost 30 bucks on tickets, drinks, and popcorn), here’s a list of films you could check out either on Blue-ray/DVD, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or Redbox!
