           Welcome to the WRC and congratulations on starting a brand new semester at Fresno City College! The tutorial center offers a number of resources to help you get through your classes with relative ease and comfort, including math, history, and English tutoring. Here at the Writing and Reading Center specifically, we have peer tutors familiar with writing and reading comprehension based assignments who are willing to help you with assignments you may be having difficulty with or even assignments you may just want an extra set of eyes on. All tutors are currently students that are going through or have gone through the same challenges that you may be going through willing to offer their experience and advice to assist you in your collegiate journey.
            When you have an essay assigned to you, you can bring the prompt to us so that we can help break down what you need to do into manageable chunks that are easier to deal with. Or if you’re already familiar with the essay writing process, you can bring a finished assignment to any of the tutors who are working to be proofread. Or you can do both, tutors are here to help at every step of the process. Outside of essay writing, we are also equipped to help with any general needs you may have related to reading or writing. Not sure what your teacher wants from you on an assignment? We can help break down their prompts or syllabi to help you understand better what’s being asked of you. Not sure what’s going on in a reading assignment? We can read it over with you and help go through what’s happening or help with note taking skills that will prepare to be tested on the material in question. Our goal is to give you the tools you need to be able to understand and execute what is being required of you.
            All of our tutors are in the same boat as you, going through the same struggles and obstacles that you’re experiencing, if they haven’t experienced them already. We aren’t here to do work for you or to give you the answers your need, but to talk you through what is being asked of you and help you express what you already have to say. Writing is always an intimate process, so it’s our goal to help give you the tools you need to be successful in whatever subject class you’re looking for help in. This is a completely free service that FCC offers to all students, so feel free to use this resource to your advantage at any time the tutorial center is open. There are tutors available from 8-7 Monday through Thursday, 8-2 on Friday, and 9-3 on Saturday. We look forward to helping you succeed in your college experience!

We, the staff, tutors, and faculty, who work at the center are excited to share blogs with you weekly about different topics of writing and reading. Tutoring Students with Cognitive Disabilities

Tutoring adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities can be difficult. To me, it is especially hard to figure out if the person is trying to take advantage of you or if they genuinely need more help than the average student. In my experience, people with cognitive and developmental disabilities do not want to take advantage of you, they might even feel embarrassed about asking you many questions. Generally people who continue to ask you questions after a half hour to an hour session with them are the people who are taking advantage of you. It is important to try and stay patient with them but make it clear that you cannot right the paper for them. Now that does not mean that all people with disabilities are perfect angels, they still might try and get you to right the paper for them. Welcome to Spring 2020!

          Welcome to the year 2020! We are in a brand new decade as well as a new semester. So this semester remember to consider all of your resources that can ensure your success as a student! There are so many resources you can utilize during this semester, the tutorial center is open and it is free. But I would like to mainly talk to you about the WRC located in the tutorial center. Here at the WRC we love to help students better understand the concepts for writing and reading. If you have a problem understanding your textbook, need help structuring a paper, learning how to take notes efficiently, or even understanding your Canvas the WRC is the place that you can get help.
