The Importance of Self-Care

When was the last time you took time out for you? As we move into fall and winter season, taking strides forward to ensure we take care of ourselves in meaningful ways is crucial to finish the semester strong. Work, school, study, and family life, can take its toll on a person’s body and spirit. Healthy wellness forward helps us to complete our goals academically, personally, and professionally. A few golden wisdom nuggets for self-care are:

  1. Sleep and nap
The body and brain needs sleep, and obtaining 7-8 hours is certain to enhance productivity in the long term.  If that is not possible, try taking 20 minute siestas (naps) during your day to wake up feeling refreshed in between class-work schedules.

  1. Healthy eating and nutritious snacks
Home cooked meals, meal prep, and healthy snacks does a body good, while keeping our metabolism up.  Fast and quick recipes are always handy when we just “Google” it. Also, meal prep for the week are time savers to no end.

  1. Mindfulness/Yoga
Take time out for centering, regrouping, and refocus on your goals-relationships-what is important to you.

  1. Take time out for nature and outdoor recreation
When was the last time you visited a place where you could enjoy the great outdoors? Taking time with Mother Nature, can do a world of good to refresh the soul and spirit. Whether it is the beach, woods, or another special place outdoors, take time to enjoy your surroundings.

  1. Take a day off from all media/technology
Taking time away from all technology, cell phones, and screens can give a person a needed break from the fast paced daily lifestyles so many of us live. In a 21st century high paced work environment, it is critical to unplug from technology and social media that bombards our daily lifestyle.

  1. Treat yourself to a new book, outing, hobby, or adventure.
In the daily race towards achieving our goals, it is imperative to be strategic and purposeful with our time to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Saying yes to self, to enjoy a happier and healthy life with those we love and care for, helps us in the long term.
