Back to School
When asking fellow peers here at work in the WRC this morning,
the following terms were brought to the table in conversation: stressful,
tired, apprehension, anticipation, lost. I’m confident that we can all relate to one of
the above phrases, now that we have survived these first two weeks of classes.
Waiting for parking, adding and dropping classes, standing in book store lines,
and adjusting to new routines, as students we are experiencing lots of different
feelings and emotions as we return to another semester.
Like anything we encounter in life, ultimately we have so
many choices and options as to how we are going to react when feeling the above
emotions and feelings. Sometimes we can feel like we are in the refiner’s fire
with outside stress and pressures. Taking time to learn skills to help us
overcome and walk through the challenges of our academic and personal life to
be successful, can only help prepare us for the future. Like you, I know how
tired I feel trying to press on when you are mentally exhausted but still have
4 more hours of studying and homework to do. Life happens.
“Be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” is a phrase I
always have used when my children have felt exasperated or challenged beyond
their limits. I find it humorous now to hear my now adult children share this
phrase, when I am faced with a new challenge that is stretching me to my
limits. Being able to navigate academics, careers, family life, and our
caseloads takes work and dedication. So I am here to CONGRATULATE you on saying
YES to your goals and career. You have decided to take these steps to grow,
learn, and discover more about you through this college experience. Some of us
will be transferring, some of us just started, regardless we have made a
critical choice to begin this venture.
So smile when you look in the mirror, and be proud of your
commitment to boldly invest in you and your future. Though at times it may seem
daunting, and there will be moments we feel like quitting, let’s encourage one
another to press on towards the goal.
Together with help, support, and encouragement we can achieve anything
we set our mind, hearts, and soul to. Let’s be that inspiration and hope for
our families and communities. We are off to a great start.
