Relishing and Capturing the Moment

Summer time. A time of renewal, relaxing, and reflection on another semester completed. Job well done.  Summer time. It can also mean an intense series of short term classes, summer heat and exhaustion, finances and health challenges. Summer time can bring so many complexities with looking for summer employment, catching up with “to-do” lists, and other summer challenges that arise in everyday life. Its summer time and we may have more free time, but perhaps have to save for tuition and books for summer and fall classes. Summer heat can also be hard physically on the body, while avoiding burn out and undue stress. Taking moments to be fully present in enjoying small daily victories toward our goals, we can celebrate those positive joys in our lives.
Social awareness of stress triggers and understanding the types of stress, we can actually take steps forward to alleviate stress in our lives. Typically, all stress falls into the following four areas:  Anticipatory, situational, encounter, and time stressors.  Some stress we cannot control, however, there are other stressors that we can evolve forward to help lighten our daily lives.
Time is always a commodity in this day and age. Who doesn’t need an extra hour in a day? Having good time management skills assists in alleviating some stress.  Another option to help relax is to use meditation and positive visualization techniques.  Taking just a few minutes daily to set aside time for ourselves helps tremendously.  Being self-aware, managing emotions, and having strategies for conflict resolution also helps to ease stress in our daily lives.  I know that for me just taking a moment to really breathe and being mindful of the moment, helps me to be centered and adjust to the daily stressors that I encounter.
As challenging as our days can be, take time to celebrate the joys in our lives. This can be family time, good grade on a class assignment, taking a road trip, obtaining that career goal, or spending time with friends. Whatever activities that bring joy and happiness to our lives, taking time daily to celebrate what is good in our lives brings a richness to our lives in the moment. Take time for you, loved ones, and simply relish these summer moments.
