How to Survive Finals

The end of the semester is approaching. Almost half a year of homework, papers and reading has been completed and now for the finishing achievement, finals. This final week is undoubtedly stressful. You’ve been working all semester, balancing school, work and family and now you can finally get a break. It’s easy to succumb to giving up early, but what were all those months of dedication for if you don’t buckle down for finals? It’s almost over! Here are some tips on how to survive and push through this last week.

1)   Stay Focused. I know it’s hard to resist throwing in the towel early, especially with so many exams and papers due all at once. But, you can stay focused by talking about everything you’ve been learning this whole semester. Talk about what you’ve read and been studying in everyday conversations with family and friends. This will help you stay interested and focused on the material, and it’s also a great way to better retain that information for your exams.

2)   Stay Organized. During finals week, everything is due at once. Papers and exams are back to back, and you’ll find yourself swamped if you don’t stay organized. Think of school as a sport; you’ve got to create a game plan. Plan every day for the last couple of weeks out. Plan what class to focus on for each day; set aside 20-30 min each day to study or work on a paper. Even planning what you’re going to wear and eat the next time will save you time in the day, and take un-needed stress off your shoulders.

3)   Stay Healthy. A healthy body is a healthy mind. You can’t expect to do well on your final assignments if you don’t take care of yourself. Studying the night before a test is definitely something you should do, but if you only get three hours of sleep, that could really hinder your ability to do well. Also, be wary of your caffeine consumption; make sure to drink plenty of water in between coffee and energy drinks.

4)   Be Proud of Yourself! I think the best way to push through this last week is to look back at this semester with pride in yourself. You are bettering yourself and your life through higher education. You are doing this! When you’re reviewing for your classes, remind yourself of all the hard work you’ve put into this semester. You’re here for a reason. Make your aspirations in life come true, and push through this last week for that dream!
